Romanesque Highlights in Slovenia

Castle Podsreda, located on the northern slope of Mount Orlica, five
kilometres apart from the market place in Podsreda, is one of the most
important preserved representative buildings of Romanesque heritage in
Slovenia. The insufficiently explored history of the castle is
compensated by the surprising expressiveness of the eighth century -
old masonry with an almost intact original core.
The Cistercian monastery in Stična is one of the most important
cultural, sacral and architectural monuments in Slovenia and is the
oldest existing Cistercian abbey in the South East part of Europe. The
first buildings were built between 1132 and 1136. The monastery soon
became the religious and cultural centre of Carniola. It became also
the medieval trade centre of this region.
The Cathedral of St. Nazarius in Koper was built in the 15th century
and contains a number of precious artistic works of Venetian masters.
Worthy of note are the Byzantine ivory chest (between the 9th and 12th
centuries), the chalice, the big monstrance from the 15th century, the
bust of St. Nazarius and the miniatures of the antiphonary.
The beginnings of Laško, situated on the banks of the Savinja River,
went back to Celtic and Roman settlements. The architecture of the old
part of the town dates from the early and late Middle Ages to present
time. The Parish Church of St. Martin in Laško with its choir from the
first half of the 13th century is a significant example of Romanesque
religious architecture.
Ptuj is one of the oldest towns in Slovenia. The provost church of St.
George is one of the most important monuments of medieval sacral
architecture in Slovenia.
