Romanesque Castle - Podsreda

The Podsreda Castle lies in the region of Kozjansko, in the area of the mighty feudal estate once owned by Countess Hemma von Friesach-Zeltschach . It was built in mid-12th century on a rectangular ground surface in the regular shape of a castle, characteristic of the period. It comprised of a palladium and walls with a shield mantle enclosing a rectangular inner courtyard. In this configuration, the Podsreda Castle resembled numerous other Romanesque castles of the period in these parts and particularly in the near-by region of Carinthia. The castle has survived all the ravages of time and occupies, due to the number and quality of preserved Romanesque elements, the very apex of Romanesque architecture in Slovenia.

Architecture
In Slovenia and other near-by regions under Alps, there is no other castle, which in the very first century of its existence, roughly in the period of 1150 -1250, underwent no less than four quite visible Romanesque building phases. Before the end of 12th century, a mighty bergfried, initially at least five stories high, was leaned against the south side of the layout, replacing the former shield mantle.Tourist Information Center
