Overview
Until today the Romanesque forms as an associational idea the image of many, especially sacral buildings between the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean. In an impressive way the project TRANSROMANICA is devoted to this common cultural heritage of Europe. The initiative, funded by the EU in 2003 and led as an association since 2007, wants to approximate the fascination of the Romanesque to a wide public. Ten regions, seven countries remember their common roots in a modern, politically capable Europe.TRANSROMANICA-Highlights
St. Maurice and St. Catherine`s Evangelic Cathedral - Magdeburg
The origins of the protestant St. Maurice and Catherine`s church are in the 10th century, when Emperor Otto I donated a monastery in Magdeburg. The today gothic appearing sacral building holds still innumerable traces of the Romanesque previous building worth being discovered and admired.
Wartburg Castle - Eisenach
The Wartburg − connected with the Bible translation of the reformer Martin Luther and the charity of the holy Elizabeth of Thuringia. Additionally the castle belongs to the best preserved secular buildings from the era of the Romanesque north of the Alps.
Romanesque Castle - Podsreda
Castle Podsreda, located on the northern slope of Mount Orlica, five kilometres apart from the market place in Podsreda, is one of the most important preserved representative buildings of Romanesque heritage in Slovenia. The insufficiently explored history of the castle is compensated by the surprising expressiveness of the eighth century - old masonry with an almost intact original core.
Cathedral - Modena (Province of Modena)
Starting from 1099 the Romanesque cathedral of Modena was erected at the place of a previous building. In 1997 the cathedral together with the Torre Civica and the Piazza Grande was included into the UNESCO world heritage list.
